The Complexities of Large-Scale Organizational Change a la the “Far Side”
November 8th, 2011 by Jeremy Lurey
There was a great Far Side cartoon once about Rex the Dog and his journey across a tightrope. You see, as the caption read, “Rex was an old dog, and this was a new trick!”
The graphic above barely does Rex justice, but at least you’ll get the point. Rex wasn’t just walking across the high wire. He was doing so while riding a unicycle, twirling a hula hoop, juggling several balls, balancing a fishbowl on his head, and holding a cat in his mouth. Oh yes, and let’s not forget the hushed crowd of spectators below who probably weren’t very hushed… Clearly not your every day feat for Rex. Probably not your every day feat for your senior leaders either! Read the rest of this entry »

Battling Resistance and Getting “Buy-In” with Kotter and Whitehead
June 28th, 2011 by Pam Hartman
What change or innovation did not begin with the planted seed of a great idea? Is YOU believing in your good idea enough? Is enthusiastically presenting it to a group knowing it will make a crucial difference going to keep it from getting shot down? John Kotter and Lorne Whitehead have delivered in their book “buy*in: saving your good idea from getting shot down” (Harvard Business Review Press, 2010) a defensive-driving, counterintuitive approach to protect those good ideas from unfair attach strategies that naysayers, nitpickers, and handwringers deploy with great success time and time again.
What we really want and may not be so effective at is to gain support by respectfully engaging your adversaries, standing your ground, and saving the day! Sound intriguing? I forewarn you they are not tactics for the fainthearted. The authors encourage you to “invite in the Lions”. You may even become traumatized by the plain talk that leads you to relive some of your greatest failures. But as with any Kotter book, your thinking will be turned upside down in a fresh and amusing way, and you will be forced to learn before you know what hit you. How does the world’s foremost authority on Leadership and Change get inside our head’s like that? And this time it’s not with Penguins (see Our Iceberg Is Melting), but a fairly docile Citizens Advisory Committee at the Centerville Library, wanting to put in new computers, and one fantastic idea. Ron McMillan Shares How To ‘Change Anything’ at ACMP Global Conference in Orlando, Florida
May 16th, 2011 by Jeremy Lurey
A couple weeks ago, several of Plus Delta’s team members attended the inaugural Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP) Global Conference in Orlando, Florida. When I arrived at the conference, I expected to hear internal change agents from some leading companies tell us about their great successes managing change in their organizations. I even expected a bunch of external consultants to tell us about their proven models for managing change. What I didn’t expect was for someone to tell us how we can “change anything” by learning how to systemically influence others.
“The most important capacity you possess is the ability to influence behavior – that of yourself or others.”

Daryl Conner Delivers Call to Action to Change Management Practitioners at Inaugural ACMP Global Conference
May 11th, 2011 by Jeremy Lurey
Due to some last-minute client meetings in Los Angeles, I unfortunately missed the opening event and John Kotter’s keynote presentation at the inaugural Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP) Global Conference in Orlando, Florida last week. I did however make it in time to hear Daryl Conner’s keynote presentation on Day Two. And what a great way to kickoff this first-ever international event of more than 700 change management practitioners!
In his address, Conner started by offering three gifts to his audience. I’m not sure any of us truly saw them as gifts initially. It really just seemed like three questions from a guy (supposedly an expert in the field!) who apparently didn’t want to give us the answers on this Tuesday morning. By the end of the session though, I wondered if Christmas had come early to Orlando as Conner had provoked some powerful thinking in me about the application of my work as an organizational change expert.

Paying Attention to Employee Motivation to ‘Drive’ Enhanced Performance
August 31st, 2010 by Cris Hagen
I just finished reading “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us“, by Daniel H. Pink where he describes some new and not so surprising “truths ” about what motivates employees. Leaders take note! Here are the headlines:
- Your sales compensation plan may not only be driving the wrong behaviors, but may be costing your organization more money than the revenue it was intended to incentivize!
- The majority of your management team may be leading people based on a set of assumptionsabout employee motivation that are not only outdated, but that are likely de-motivating in the long run!
- If your company cannot point to any products, services, or activities that are socially redeeming and that contribute to “the greater good” of society at large, your employees are likely going to “underperforming”.
- If managers do not understand the difference between “carrot and stick” motivation and the intrinsic, deep-desire people have to direct their own lives and live a life of purpose, they will fail to realize the full potential of their employees, and companies will fail to realize greater productivity from those employees.

5 Critical Steps to Implementation Success: Why Aren’t We Learning From Our Mistakes?
April 7th, 2010 by Kim Barnett

For the last 10+ years I’ve been managing client relationships and selling Change Management consulting and training solutions to organizations that want to adopt a common approach to manage change. It continues to fascinate me that despite the increased focus and discipline applied in this field, implementation efforts continue to fail because of human factors. Organizational Change Management as an industry has existed for 40 years if not longer. Over the past 10-15 years it has become increasingly more common for large organizations to recognize the need to manage the human issues when implementing large-scale change (i.e. ERP or technology implementations, mergers and acquisitions, culture change, reengineering or business process change, downsizing, organization redesign, or any project that involves changing the way people do their jobs). Much has been written about why implementation efforts fail. Statistics continue to illustrate that approximately 80% of change efforts fail to meet budget, target dates, or key objectives. It is also well documented that the highest risk of implementation failure is on the human side, and not with the technology. Many Fortune 500 organizations today understand that by applying a structured approach or framework to manage the human side, the chance of a successful project will substantially increase. Then why aren’t we learning from our past mistakes? Read the rest of this entry »
