-er Is Not Always -er

Bigger, better, faster, stronger… Is it really? I’m starting to wonder about that!

As you may have read in previous blog posts, I’m a fairly driven, Type A, achievement-oriented kind of person. Actually, saying it like that doesn’t even scratch the surface on how I’m wired. I left Big Firm consulting to start my own consulting practice by the time I turned 30. I was honored as a Top 40 Under 40 executive of the year not once but two times in a row before turning 40. And all this time, I’ve always strived for -er in my life.

Now, I’m finally realizing that I’ve been striving for the wrong -ers. Good really can be good enough in many cases, so bigger, better, faster, stronger isn’t necessary.

This year, I’m aiming for a new set of -ers in my life. Slower, steadier, healthier to name a few. This hasn’t been a focus of mine in the past, so it will be interesting to see what results this new intention produces. I’m guessing a few more -ers, including happier!

So what do you do to maintain balance and composure and peace of mind in your life? My guess is you might not be doing enough if you are focusing on those other uber -ers, so I invite you to take an inventory on your life’s ambitions and make sure that they are in fact the right ambitions to strive for – now and always…
